Scott Lehnkering
I originally came up with the idea for this life-saving business because I realized as a medic that most people do not know what to do in a crisis situation when it comes to saving someones life.

I have owned and operated several businesses in the health and fitness industry for over fifteen years. My last p/t business, Pro Active Fitness, provided guidance and instruction to companies setting up exercise and weight loss programs for their employees. It was while I was conducting this business, I discovered I had a knack for teaching and helping others which propelled into thinking a new way. Because of this new perspective, I formed A Hero for Life to educate and train others with the life-saving skills necessary to really make a difference. I really can’t think of a business to be in that’s more gratifying than this one and actually getting paid to do it.

Our classes are guaranteed to be informative and presented in an easy format to understand. Because we are committed to saving lives, A Hero for Life will travel to any location in Orange County for groups even as small as five people.

#103 - Rad Refresher,-Improving the diagnostic quality of your x-rays.
Janet Simpson
This course has no additional fee.

Digital radiography has some tremendous advantages over traditional film, no more chemicals, instant feedback, amazing images … well…maybe not so much. The technology is amazing.  The images could be amazing.   However, many dental practices have grown accustomed to poor diagnostic quality images.  They seem to be resigned to foreshortening, cone cuts and closed contacts.  There are even a few who just accept mandibular molar images without apices as if that’s as good as it gets.  What’s up with that?!?   Let’s face it, there are significant differences between wired digital sensors and film.  Identifying them is half the battle, overcoming them is the other.  This class will provide perspective, information, tips and tricks the student can use in clinical practice to improve the diagnostic quality of their radiographs.

Learning Objectives:
• Understand how the differences between wired sensors and Traditional film affect the diagnostic quality of your images.
• Convert the principles of shadow casting into useful skills to capture apices, open contacts and acquire images that are hard to reach.
• Review the paralleling and bisecting techniques
• Refresh infection control protocol as it pertains to the radiography procedure.
• Refresh understanding of Radiation safety
• Learn a few Ninja moves.

Janet Simpson was trained on the job, and became an RDA, CDA in 1991.  A graduate of San Diego State University she earned her Bachelors of Vocational Education (Summa Cum Laude) in 2008.  While an adjunct instructor at San Diego Mesa College Dental Assisting Program, she was recognized as an “Exemplary online instructor”.  Janet is a caring, highly innovative instructor with consistently high reviews from her students.  She now owns and operates Dental Fundamentals Continuing Education whose mission it is to make learning dental auxiliary skills easy and fun.

#104 - Bringing the Science of Chronic Disease to a Conclusion and the Implications to Our Future in Dentistry
William Nordquist DMD MS
This course has no additional fee.

Chronic disease, such as, heart disease, diabetes, tooth decay, periodontal disease, numerous neurological diseases, and an endless array of named chronic diseases, has been shrouded in mystery since the end of World War II. Treating the symptoms of these diseases have been so much a part of our medical professions’ culture, that most of us “old-timers” at least, thought treatment and our high income derived from it would never end.

The questions that will be discussed are:
1. What causes chronic disease and what is the science that proves it?
2. Is the better understanding of chronic disease and prevention by the public beginning to decrease the volume of dentistry
    needed by our patients?
3. How do we as dentists not only understand chronic disease but become the experts in treating and reversing chronic disease?
4. Plus, the most difficult part of this equation is, how do we profit financially in our labor of love?

The goal of this course is to inspire those dentists already interested in health and well-being to sign up and come to this presentation with the intention to share their knowledge. Hopefully, by collectively sharing we can formulate the long-term strategies needed to achieve both the goals of optimum health and financial stability needed for us teachers to survive in this new challenging environment we find ourselves today.

#406 - Permanent Solution for TMJ Dysfunction
Vincent Tran, DDS

There is a tremendous need for a permanent solution for TMJ Dysfunction. It is estimated that up to 20% of the population is affected by TMD. The symptoms are well known, ranging from headaches, earaches, neck pain or stiffness, congestion or ringing in the ears, clicking, popping or grating noises, tired jaw or pain when chewing, limited mouth opening or jaw locking, dizziness and fainting, pain behind the eyes, numbness in the hands, shoulder and back pain. The current treatments of surgery, function appliance, and night guard are ineffective. TMD has remained a mysterious disease up until now.
Dr. Tran will show you how to recognize and diagnose TMD. Participants will learn the skill sets necessary to effectively treat TMD. Participants will also learn how to present a $30K treatment plan with great acceptance rate.

Lecture Discussion:
Review of the TMJ anatomy
TMJ Exam-Demonstration
How to recognize TMD just by looking at patient posture and facial profile
Orthodontics- A must-have knowledge
Smile Makeover- A necessary knowledge
Full Mouth Reconstruction
Implants and its role in treating TMD

Dr. Tran received his Master’s in Mechanical Engineering from MIT in 1987 and then later pursued his interest in Dentistry at UCLA School of Dentistry, graduating in 1995. To progress his expertise in his field, Dr. Tran has received extensive training in Full Mouth Reconstruction and Smile Makeover Design. Many of his patients go through reconstruction under sedation. Dr. Tran is also one of the few dentists who can treat TemporoMandibular Joint  Dysfunction (TMD). He has miraculously cured many patients with debilitating headaches. These patients were told by numerous physicians and dentists to just “live” with the headache or simply were given convenient labels such as “trigeminal neuralgia” or “fibromyalgia”. Dr. Tran believes in treating patients to the best of his ability, with concern and sympathy. Dentistry is a fast changing profession and for the sake of patients, those in the occupation must be willing to learn and adopt new knowledge in order to be able to provide the best care possible for their patients. Dr. Tran is constantly learning and applying new techniques and material to incorporate them into his practice. His experience with engineering has also helped him in reconstruction of people’s smiles.
Aside from dentistry, Dr. Tran enjoys tennis and travelling with his wife, Jenny, and two daughters, VyVy and Maily. Dr. Tran is a standing member of the International Association for Orthodontics, Dental Oral Conscious Sedation (DOCS), and Association of General Dentists (AGD).

This course has a 1-day fee of
